SAUVIGNON
BLANC |
We
have tried various different styles of Sauvignon Blanc over the
20 years we have been making it. I have settled on a ripe unwooded
style that suits my palate and is sufficiently different to attract
those that find many of the New Zealand style wines too be too
green on the nose and lacking a full palate.
Tasting
Notes:
Clean, fresh;
good varietal expression on the bouquet; excellent drive to
gooseberry, kiwifruit and snow pea palate, deliciously long
and succulent.

SEMILLON |
We planted the Semillon in 1981 and since then we have made many
different styles both as a straight varietal and in combination
with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadel, both wooded and unwooded.
Our current wines are 100% Semillon unwooded. The style is not
yet fixed and will change.
Tasting Notes:
A
clean tight reserved style, showing citrus rind characters
with some stone/mineral
overtones, displays good length. Drink 2010

CABERNETS |
2003
was the worst drought year we had experienced until 2007.
We had to buy water for the house tanks 8 times that year and
our storage
capacity is 66,000 litres. The dry grown cabernet vines completely
defoliated thus no photosynthesis and no ripening. Simon
from Steels Creek Estate came to our aid with grapes and this
terrific wine is the result.
Tasting
Notes:
Light to medium-bodied; while the
origin of the grapes is entirely different from the ’04,
similar handling techniques in the winery have resulted in
a wine of similar style, and slightly more fruit weight.

PINOT NOIR |
Ever
since the breakthrough pinot noir of 1996 we have been
making powerful pinots that have attracted the attention and high
marks of all
the “gurus” to whom we have submitted the wines.
This wine is no exception.
Tasting Notes:
Deep
colour, very intense, complex and powerful, but has good balance,
rich
plum
and black cherry, then a suggestion of slightly dank oak. Controversial. Drink

SHIRAZ |
Simon
at Steels Creek unfortunately broke his arm and thus we
ended up with enough Shiraz grapes to make 3 barrels. This is
very black
peppery and spicy. Great with a hot pizza (hot salami ,
chillis and anchovies)
Tasting Notes:
Purple-red,
light to medium bodied, bright, fresh spicy
cherry and blood plum fruit, fine
tannins.
